Grace. A deep, so very deep, well of grace is found in our Lord.
“For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1st Corinthians 1:26-31
Every time I read this verse, I am reminded of the words of Dallas Willard in his book The Divine Conspiracy. He elegantly demonstrates just how deep the grace within the Gospel of Jesus reaches.
This is the gospel for a silly world….If the kingdom did not reach us in our silliness would would be saved?
Blessed are they physically repulsive,
Blessed are those who smell bad,
The twisted, misshapen, deformed,
The too big, too little, too loud,
The bald, the fat, and the old–
For they are all riotously celebrated in the party of Jesus.
But there is even more grace to give.
The flunk-outs and drop-outs and burned-outs. The broke and the broken. The drug heads and the divorced. The HIV-positive and herpes-ridden. The brain damaged, the incurably ill. The barren and pregnant too-many-times or at the wrong time. the overemployed, the underemployed, and the unemployed. The unemployable. The swindled, the shoved aside, the replaced. The parents with children living on the street, the children with parents not dying in the ‘rest’ home. The lonely, the incompetent, the stupid. The emotionally starved or emotionally dead. And on and on and on.
And even more grace…
Murderers and child-molesters. The brutal and the bigoted. Drug lords and pornographers. War criminals and sadists. Terrorists. The perverted and the filthy and the filthy rich. The David Berkowitz (‘Son of Sam’), Jeffrey Dahmers, and Colonel Noriegas.
and yet, even more grace..
To the pederasta and the perpetrator of incest. To the worshiper of Satan. To those who rob and the aged and weak. To the cheat and the liar, the bloodsucker and the vengeful: Blessed! Blessed! Blessed!
“And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”~ 1st Corinthians 6:11
