I ran to help my leader.
The other day I was helping out at one of our Southern California multi-site campuses. Pastor Rick Warren was visiting and needed something he wanted to show the audience from stage. Knowing he was just a few moments from having to go on stage and knowing where to find the needed objects, I ran.
At some point as I sprinted through the halls I asked myself, “Why am I running?”
Am I running because time is short? Yes. Am I running because he is my boss? Yes.
But it was so much more than that.
I ran because I trust my leader.
I ran because I love my leader.
I ran because my leader has integrity and is as good as his word.
The foundation of leadership is character, not charisma- Rick Warren
Just a moment before running off to help Pastor Rick, a volunteer standing near by mentioned that his father had a stroke earlier in the week. Just two days prior in a Saddleback staff meeting, Pastor Rick reminded the staff that people are not interruptions…they are our ministry. Not worrying that time was running short and he would soon have to be on stage, Pastor Rick headed straight to him, put a comforting hand on his shoulder, and took the time to pray for him and his father.
This was not an interruption…this was ministry. Pastor Rick was as good as his word.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters. -Alan K. Simpson
So I ran…
I ran to serve my leader who has been a model of servant leadership for over 35 years at Saddleback Church.
I ran because for 35 years he ran.
He served…so I serve.
That is the speed of integrity. That is the speed of servant leadership. That is the speed of spiritual leadership.
That is the speed of trust.
Servant Leadership Lesson:
The beauty of servant leadership is that when you lead with service it…you receive service from those you lead.
Spiritual Leadership Lesson:
A good shepherd is, at heart, a good sheep.
People will put their faith in you to the extent that you put your faith in them and in Jesus. A disciple can always say, “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:15
